Case Study: Contractor Went From $0 – $100K Business in 24 Months
Learn how my husband, Devin, grew his general contracting business from $0 – $100K in 24 months working part-time hours.
Once my health coaching business took off making $10K in just 90 days (case study here) of implementing my sales conversion system it blew my husband’s mind.
This inspired him to start his own general contracting construction business for residential homeowners.
So in February of 2018, we legalized his business. The picture above is of us signing the legal formation documents.
The Work We Focused On:
Just to be clear, during his first couple years in business I didn’t even create a business plan or financial projections for him. (EEEEP! It’s true, I didn’t start as a business coach I learned with time through my own success & failures what is truly important & what’s not. lol) we literally just winged it and included the following things.
First year:

- Word of Mouth
- Vehicle Magnets, License Plates, & Decals
- Content Marketing For Lead Generation
- Mostly just pictures of projects he was working on & before/afters

- Google Business Setup To Show Up On Maps & in Google Search
- Bookkeeping Software Setup & Management
- T-shirt Formation For Our Own Family For Marketing & Sweepstakes Giveaways
The Process Explained On Growing The Business To $100K
Before clients started rolling in …
We legalized his business LLC.
I then immediately put my marketing skills to work creating his website & business cards for his business to feel real along with his Facebook Business Page.
In the following days everywhere we went that it was allowed, we began leaving those business cards… gas stations, peg boards at restaurants, etc in our local area.
Everyone we talked to in our immediate network when we saw them, we told them that he had started his own business & we’d love for them to share the word.
Additionally, I set up a local radius Facebook Ad in all the counties he desired & was legally registered to work in along with posting a graphic on his business page of all the services he offered.
After that, I set up a Sweepstakes Campaign of a rock giveaway because we had just purchased a dump truck & could deliver it. This EXPLODED growing his FB Business page to almost 500 viewers overnight. (If you would like to use this method, be sure to look into Facebook’s terms for doing so as they have changed over the years. You don’t want to go against their community standards & get your account shut down.)
The calls started rolling in almost immediately with people needing estimates for their projects.
After clients started rolling in…
When he works on the projects, he takes pictures of what he is working on. After that, I often add them to his FB Business page. (In the beginning of his business we did this religiously, literally, every project but as the years have passed we have done less & less of social media marketing.)
Honestly, that’s truly the extent of it. We still do a lot of the same marketing stuff for his business today.
He started creating the estimates & people started accepting his offers.
The sales numbers…
We legalized his business in February 2018. In his first year, by December his business made over $48K.
In the second year, his income dropped a little. Unfortunately, we were still winging it & I eased back on marketing to work more in my own business but he still surpassed $44K while doing most all of the marketing on his own.
As I got more intentional on year three, we created his business plan. Then, I explained the numbers so he knew which projects he needed & how many of each to achieve his financial goals for his business.
AND BOOM! By February 2020 he surpassed his first $100K in sales just 2 years into the business.
He has went on to double and multiply his sales after that sustainably growing his business year after year.
We still do all the same marketing tactics and have occasionally added in things like parades to throw out candy – but we add a business card or custom pens. Additionally, we have t-shirts & yard signs to leave at crossroads, sponsorships at sporting events for the kids, etc.
Additionally, he has taken advantage of networking for referrals & partnering so they can sub work out to one another when the workload is too much or they can’t get the projects started soon enough to satisfy clients.
He simply WORKS his business.
The biggest marketing success for him (without the online marketing I do for him) it’s simply old-fashioned WORD OF MOUTH. Plus, he personally hands people his business card when the topic comes up. He makes a new friend everywhere he goes.
